Step 1. Check Level, Distance and Height

Before you start your install ensure that the tank the Watchman Sonic is to be fitted to is:

  • On a flat level base
  • Within a 200 metre range from the receiver's position
  • A maximum actual tank height of 3 metres, this is excluding the base

Step 2. Tank Preparation

A). Pre-Drilled Tanks

A lot of oil tanks may already have a pre-drilled 32mm opening on the top. If so, ensure the hole is a minimum diameter of 30mm.

Ensure that the space beneath the Watchman unit is free of any obstacles and that the ultrasonic path is clear from obstructions as show in the image.

B). Un-Drilled Tanks

When drilling is required for fitment of the transmitter, choose a flat level point that is at the same level and no higher than any opening on the top of the oil tank (filling point etc.).

For tanks with window corrugations or internal braces please ensure that the Watchman Sonic is not positioned above them, or with 15cm of the window area or edge of tank.

Step 3. Fitting the Transmitter Base

For tanks with pre-drilled holes:
  • Insert the transmitter base, ensuring the weather seal is securely in place
  • Tighten the Watchman Sonic base onto the oil tank with the supplied screws, ensuring not to overtighten

Step 4. Define the Tank Height

Accurately measure the height of your actual tank making a note of the measurement. The maximum tank height is 3 metres from the base of the oil tank to the position of the Watchman Sonic.
  • Height does not include the base/piers which the tank sits on.

Step 5. Setting the Switches on the Receiver

Using the tank height chart, in your instructions, read across to the relevant multi switch setting using the oil tank measurements that you took earlier. The multi switches are located in a recess at the back of the receiver.

Simply use a screwdriver or pen tip to flip the switches.

Step 6. Matching the Receiver and Transmitter

You should match the receiver (Part A) with the transmitter (Part D) so that the system code is unique to your tank. You only need to do this once. Plug receiver into a suitable and convenient electrical socket and switch on.

The display screen on the front of the receiver will now show a flashing bar. This indicates that the receiver is waiting on a unique code from the transmitter. This bar will continue to flash for 2 minutes, during which time you can match the transmitter to the receiver.

Hold the transmitter against the receiver right hand side, so that the white dot on the transmitter is touching the black dot on the receiver for about 20 seconds to allow the unique code to be transferred. Bars will increase up the display screen and you will hear a clicking sound. When all 10 bars are shown they will flash to indicate that the unique code is transferred. When matched, the transmitter must immediately be placed on the oil tank.

Step 7. Fitting the Transmitter to the Base

Screw the transmitter (Part D) into the base (Part E). Ensure the transmitter is vertical on top of the tank and level, screwing it down to give it a secure seal.

Step 8. Check the Level of Oil in the Tank

The bar graph represents the level of oil in your tank.

Please note, it can take up to 2 hours for the first accurate reading to be displayed.
