Which 5.0Ah Batteries Should I choose?

Posted: 26 February 2015

Most of the large power tool companies have now released their variations of the 5.0AH battery pack but which one should you choose? Each of the brands battery chemistry is the same so what sets them apart is how their arranged, cooled and protected.

Milwaukee 5.0Ah Packs:

Milwaukee are the latest tool company to reveal their range of 5.0Ah tools but what sets their pack apart from the other? The new battery packs boast up to 2.5x more runtime, up to 20% more power and up to 2x more battery life compared to their previous generations of batteries.

The packs upgraded thermal performance reduces the batteries running temperature by 20% while the water protection routes water away from the main component, in turn increasing the battering working life. The new design has been fitted with separators that absorb high vibration when being used with the Sawzall.

DeWalt 5.0Ah Packs:

DeWalt's 5.0Ah battery pack has been carefully designed to be the same size and weight as the 3.0 batteries while delivering 66% more runtime. The 5.0Ah battery technology has no memory effect and virtually no self discharge allowing you to pick up from where you finished off even after long periods of time.

The battery has an LED state of charge indicator that shows you how much charge is left, allowing you to judge whether to use it or put it on charge. The battery pack is completely backwards compatible with the whole 18 volt XR Li-Ion range.

Bosch 5.0Ah Packs:

The Bosch 5.0Ah battery packs have been cleverly designed with a durable housing that survives drops from up to 3 metres and cold weather operation in temperatures as low as -4°F. The battery packs offer up to 25% more runtime compared to the old 4.0Ah packs.

Bosch has added their unique CoolPack technology into these batteries allowing the heat to be conducted for up to 2x longer battery life. The integrated fuel gauge allows you to check the charge easily at a glance. The flexible power system of these batteries allows them to be used with existing 18v Bosch machines.

In our opinion all of the battery packs are good in their own way with Bosch having a highly durable casing and the Milwaukee providing 2.5x more runtime. All of the new 5.0Ah battery packs are completely backwards compatible with their own 18 volt tools so it might be better to add to our collection or even start a new one.
