Mowing 24 Hours After Watering

It's recommended that you mow your lawn within a 24 hour period of watering your garden. The reason behind this is that the water will be retained within the soil and will help the regeneration process of your grass after recent cuts, stopping the tips of the grass from becoming brown / yellowed.

Grass Seeds & Fertilizers

Choosing the type of grass seed you use when initially sowing your garden is essential. Each variety of grass has its own pros and cons depending on the type of area your sowing, lighting and water conditions so be sure to read the box before purchasing your seed. Take into considerations factors such as temperature, rainfall, exposure to sun and growth rate. The Evergreen fast grass seed is ideal for use in a range of areas.

Raking The Lawn

Technically known as mulching the lawn. It is suggested that running a rake through your lawn to remove dead grass, leaves and anything obstructing the penetration of water and sunlight to the grass will help your lawn to remain greener and healthier throughout the year. The best season to rake the lawn is during the summer, but bear in mind to be careful not to damage healthy living grass or the soil. The motion and depth of raking should be more of a combing of the surface as oppossed to raking. Make sure to use a lawn rake not a soil rake.

Prevent Weeds By Filling The
Gaps In The Soil

Nobody wants to have weeds growing through their lawn. One common reason for the
sprouting of lawn weeds comes down to the initial spreading of the grass seed where the seed has been distributed unevenly. So try your hardest to make sure that you spread your
seed evenly from the very outset. A fantastic
way of preventing the growth of weeds involves laying thicker grass seed on the lawn (where there are patchy areas). In doing this the
thicker grass seed uses up the remaining soil space and chokes out weeds making it harder for them to grow within the lawn.

Aerate Your Lawn In Spring & Fall

This is a different process to mulching. It can be quite easy to confuse the two if you are not well versed with different gardening techniques and in most cases if you are thinking of purchasing an aerator, products such as the Draper aerator pictured above are sold as a two in 1 tool. So just make sure you purchase the correct tools before beginning.
Aerating is the process by which you create air passages in the soil by poking small holes into the surface of the lawn, granting the roots access to additional water, nutrients and air thus promoting the healthy growth of a greener lawn. Make sure that you aerate your lawn during the spring (pre-season) to the summer. This gives the lawn a chance to absorb more nutrients and water before the hotter weather comes in. On the other hand aerating after the summer in the fall is also important. Again it allows the lawn to have a healthier growth rate before the winter months where hard frost and lack of nutrients in the soil can be damaging to your green lawn.

Water The Grass Periodically

This is a much debated topic amongst green fingered enthusiasts and professional
gardeners. Watering your grass is an essential part any horticultural lawn routine. It prevents
the grass from drying out and becoming brown and yellowed. It has been suggested by the Royal Horticultural Society that the best time to water the lawn is early in the morning because the water is less likely to evaporate in comparison to peak times at mid day or early afternoons. To achieve a greener lawn ensure that you water your grass until the water has penetrated atleast 6 inches. Naturally the seasons and weather dictates how often you should water your lawn. During the summer in hot conditions it is recommended to water
atleast once a week. During winter months
where there is heavier rainfall you will need to gauage on a weekly basis whether your
lawn will need additional watering or not.

Fertilizers, Lawn Feeds & Lawn Repair Kits

Now a days consumers are bombarded with a massive range of lawn care products from fertilizers to lawn repair kits. With hundreds of brands to pick from in the UK market choosing the right product can often be daunting, especially when every branded product has a promise to be the best.

The 6 tips mentioned above are an integral part of a yearly routine that you should be actioning to ensure a greener garden. However to achieve the perfect lawn you need to consider all factors including the use of artificial fertilizers and lawn care kits. It's simply a matter of choosing the correct product to ensure the best outcome for your lawn.

Scientifically nitrogen stimulates and promotes the growth of green foliage. Why? Well nitrogen is an major constituent of the chlorophyll molecule (This brings me back to school). Chlorophyll is a chemical substance that is needed during the process of photosynthesis (plant growth) AND gives the plants their green colour. The most prevelant nitrogen source comes in the form of ammonia. Ammonia can be hard to obtain and if you can obtain it, be sure to take the relevant safety precautions before working with it as it is highly corrosive!

Recommended method: Take a cup of ammonia and mix dilute it with 5 gallons of water. Mix it thoroughly and apply to the lawn. Once applied hose the grass further with water to ensure deep penetration to the soil.

If you can't get your hands on concentrated ammonia then consider using a nitrogen based lawn feed. The higher the nitrogen % the greener your garden. From previous experience I would highly recommend the Evergreen 4 In 1 lawn feed. It actually removes mosses and weeds, whilst helping to promote the growth of grass and provides you with a greener coloured lawn. It has a 14% nitrogen concentration.
