Halloween Facts

Welcome to the Ray Grahams blog. This week we've gone off on a limb and decided to cross into the paranormal and unknown territories. That's right Halloween night is fast on the approach and streets wordlwide will be filled wiith little monsters, howling gouls, vampires and beasts of the night!

So if you're like me, then most of you probably part take in seasonly festivities without really knowing what they're all about and how they came to be, so we've delved into the darkness of the internet to dig up some of the most unusual and random Halloween facts.

Horrible Haunted Halloween History:

Did you know that Halloween was originally referred to as Samhain or "Hallows Eve" and is dated back to around 2000 years ago to a pre-christian festival that was celebrated around November the 1st. A true meaning of the celebration is not exact but speculation suggests that the festival was initially held as an annual meeting to the end of the years harvest, where Celtic tribes gathered resources for the coming winter months. In addition to this it was also thought to be a time to communicate with the dead! Spooky to think that we're still trying to do it 2000 years later.

Costumes and Trick or Treating:

We're all familiar with the hustle and bustle of Halloween especially if you have young children, every parents nightmare is the creation of a fancy dress costume, whether it be for a party or trick or treating. But if you are innovative and creative then there can be alot of fun to be had when creating your own costumes. I recently tried to carve some halloween pumpkins and I ended up purchasing 5 of them by the time I had completed the outlined "batman" design. If ever there was a time that I needed expert carving tools this was one! So if you're pumpkin carving I'd highly recommend these.

Some theories suggest that the tradition of dressing up originated from Celtic heritage where tribes would decorate themselves in animal hides and skulls in order to connect with the dead. During the Samhain parades the leaders wore a white sheet and carried a decorated horse skull on a stick. The reason for dressing up been that people thought that they would escape the notice of the real demons and spirits walking the streets by disguising themselves. Obviously in this modern age we can't parade real horse heads around, but whats not say you can't create one. Papier-Mashe is a wonderful activity for all age groups. If you do fancy a go at this try using Wallpaper paste
over PVC glue it is always incredibly useful for creating strong papier-mashe models.

The practice can also be related to the medieval custom of "souling". This is where people would knock on doors and ask for food in exchange for prayers for the dead. So not only was it a festival to connect with the dead it was a time for giving to the poor. As times evolved this has now become better known as trick or treating, where a modern twist has been applied and children now recieve candy, toys and money for a trick or treat. BUT did you know that before the trick or treat people used to have to dance in order to recieve their gift!

Some animal shelters won't allow the adoption of black cats around Halloween for fear they'll be sacrificed:

This sounds down right ridiculous but there are some extremists out there. Some animal shelters WILL NOT allow the adoption of black cats on the run up to the Halloween holidays in fear that they may be sacraficed. This happened because there was a stigma with black cats been bad luck at this time of year and those with the stgma, paranoia and fear often adopted the cats in order to sacrafice them to protect themselves against bad karma. One such organisation the ASPCA quote "Years ago, this used to be pretty common -- that shelters would not adopt out cats during Halloween for fear of something horrible happening to the cats, but we don't hear too much anymore and many shelters are actually holding a special black cat promotion around the holiday."

We suggest you simply burn a a pile of wood and waste in your garden that's alot more warming and entertaining!

The Introduction of Fireworks:

Where do fireworks fit into all of the dressing up and mourning the dead? Well intially the tradition of Halloween started in Ireland and was celebrated around the first of November. It somewhat co-incided with Guy Fawkes night which was celebrated in Britain on November the 5th. As traditions started to co-incide and merge Halloween became a mix of both Guy Fawkes night and Halloween, hence the inclusion of fireworks in modern day celebrations.

When lighting fireworks please take care. The Butane Pencil Torch is a handy way of protecting yourself when lighting fireworks. We found that it gives you that extra hands length when lighting firework fuses, should anything be dud or go wrong! Take care when using fireworks.
