The DRT50 is a fantastic versatile machine from Makita that allows on-site trimming and routing without the need for cords or transformers. It uses a brushless motor which is highly efficient and allows the bit to rotate up to an incredible 30,000 rpm. Brushless motors also allow a much longer runtime from compatible Lithium-ion batteries, and require less maintenance overall. This version of the kit includes four different bases to give you a range of different options. The bases are the trimmer base, offset base, plunge base and tilt base, each with their own speciality. As the name suggests, the tilt base allows you to tilt the router around the base by negative 30 degrees to positive 45 degrees - one fantastic advantage of this is that you can use ordinary bits for specialised purposes, such as a 45° edging, instead of needing a 45° router bit. The plunge base has two easy to handle rubberised grips either side and lets you make repeatable plunging cuts easily. It even has a three-part deth stop so that you can quickly switch between 3 different depths repeatedly. The offset base is possibly one of the most impressive of the four, as it transfers the cutting action to one side, letting you get as close to walls and corners as 18.5mm. Finally we have the trimmer base, the standard router base which is a lightweight yet sturdy way of holding your router. The router can be switched between each of these bases in a matter of seconds thanks to the quick release clips that securely clamp the router into the base. The router itself features a variable speed dial that allows for a speed as low as 10,000 rpm. For even greater adaptability, the DRT50 can accept 6 - 8mm / ¼″ - ⅜″ collets.
