Most Common Types of Burglary

There 3 primary methods that professionals robbers tend to use:

  • Doors and windows: A high percentage of burglars make their initial entrance to properties through the doors and windows either by forcing the lock or simply kicking it down.

  • Distraction Burglaries: This technique is quite commonly used against the elderly. Often working in pairs or larger numbers burglars will pose as working professionals offering a service or product, taking up your time at one entrance to your property while another makes entry via another entrance. If you encountered unofficial businessmen or shady characters there are some measures you can take to protect yourself. If you like they may be a bogus caller, check with their company whether their official representatives, do so by checking your local directory such as yellow pages or the BT phone book. Never ring the number they provide you with.

  • Going away on holiday: Alot of people tend to travel away on christmas day or spend alot of time with friends and family over the month of December. This is an ample time for burglars to raid your property, while nobody is in. There are simple yet effective measures you can take to deter burglars. Alot of the time burglars will "case" the property. Monitor it for activity over a period of time, so make it appear as if someone if home. If you're going to be absent for a number of days set your lights on automatic timers giving the effect of someone at home. If you're going to be going away for longer it's also advisable to stop mail and letters been posted to the property. A build up of mail is a great indicator to burglars that someone hasn't been present for a while, Royal mail actually offer a "keepsafe" service for people going on holidays.
